....School Days

Early morning light peeped into the narrow opening of the curtained glass window in Athana's room. She was on her legs, staring coldly at the huge cat she found a day after she arrived at the school's premises. The cat was sleeping snugly on her bed, covered by her warm blanket like a house master. Kicking the cat off the bed wont change the sleeping-on-the-floor experience she had that night. The sole comfort that shared her cool bed experienced was a small downy pillow the cat probably provided for her at least. Athana grab the fluffy stuff and threw it irritably to the snoring cat, but its face remained unwavered. "How did I allow you to stay in my room..?" She mumbled her curses and went to bathe. She's been sleeping less than her usual habit of a 5 hours sleep for the past three days. Her nightmares continually visit her daily slumber but this time, since the recent temple assault incidence, her fears grew darker and creepier.

The last update she had about her granmum came from Woodrow, when the headmaster noticed her one time outside his quarters hooked in deep thoughts while gripping hard a short blade her granmum made her. She was told that when his emissaries came to pick her from the temple, they found no bodies, dead or alive once when they thoroughly searched the area.Though blood stains and remnants of an earlier battle were left noticeable to the naked eye.

Athana dressed herself as she prepares for the first day of school. She's been neglecting her practice duty lately since there were sentries which gaurd the school grounds every night for security purposes. Students were prohibited from roaming the corridors during dark hours, but she's been seeing a lot of unfamiliar faces standing by and waiting in unrestricted areas when night time befalls.

Bolting the doorknob lock for her lazy cat, Athana made her way to the groundfloor to get fed for breakfast. But she did not passed the stairs. She may not fear ghost or any similar scary stories but there was this certain lady who lurks in the 3rd story of their dormitory who has a weird aura that sends chills down her spine. So instead of taking the elevator or stairs, the best way to avoid the shrilling encounter is through the overlooking window found by the end of one corner.

Jumping off the building looks suicidal, yet she justified that there were trees below to deccelerate her speed from falling tough to the ground.

Scratches embraced her as she passed through the branches and twigs of the tall tree but she landed safely. Though , some random girl spilled her hot coffee, surprised by the abruptness of her appearance from the fall. Athana shrugged off the leaves which clinged to her garment, smoothen it up and left the girl in coffee-bath with a blunt "...morning".

As she skidded away, her steps trailed off at the sight of the abounding number of students occupying the whole campus. She never had seen such a school which can house a student body as big as this. Of course, the mountain areas do not provide the villagers with some splendid civilized buildings and other structures they could get used to like in the city. She could only witness this kind of crowd only through the aid of a television they owned. Once or twice did she experienced leaving the mountain, but she was securely covered in long garments and hood whenever they go out of the village for reasons she's still doubtful of.

Athana continued to gawk in a close mouth over the noisy scenery she was in. A lot of screaming girls were mobbing some school idols, both male and female, student and faculty members of the institution. She wondered how could this people handle such troubling situations if it is like this everyday.

Back in her hometown.. it was peaceful. And boring. They have some campus idols too, but they don't receive overrated applauses like this people do.

Honked by a sumptuous and seemingly ostentatious glossy car, Athana was snapped out from her wandering imagination. She did not notice that her feet had led her to the entrance gate of the school and was one of the people who were blocking the path to the campus garage. Stepping quickly away to avoid the naggings, she proceeded to the cafeteria to have her breakfast before she heads to the assembly hall.

Even there, the room was populated with students, and no table was available for her to occupy. After a short stroll around, she tried asking to a chattering group." ...May I sit in?" The girls probably did not hear her. They continued on. She pouted. "...excuse me.." But her voice never reached them.

The sound of their laughter topples her faint call. So she jumped into the next table which is occupied by an awkwardly silent group of people. They just glance at her like a complete nobody. Luckily, the front table was left empty after another random group of students stood and went away.

And alone she sat on a long table and started eating....waiting probably...

...Pondering about how she could get used to a life like this. A life without her granmum.

A life which gave lonliness a deeper and piercing meaning...
